Pigman Gallery is pleased to present Beyond the Protection of, a body of new work by Rebecca Cariño on view from December 7, 2006 to January 5, 2007.

Rebecca Cariño will debut new paintings and a digital animation that explore both memory and current connections with those in her life. Cariño renders her subjects in a way that is photographic and at the same time distorted as though lapsed through the filter of memory. Her subject matter takes its cue from excavations of personal histories and presents them in minimally composed paintings set on an intimate scale. In Cariño’s work, subdued colors and sparsely cropped images lend themselves to a haunting and melancholic atmosphere: a bare fluorescent bulb on a wall simply emanates its cool glow, or in contrast, an unsettling house fire burns bright in the distance against the night sky. In Beyond the Protection of, the individual paintings as a body of work slowly begin to unveil their own ambiguous narrative.

Rebecca Cariño was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylavania, attended FIT in New York, and graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in Painting. She has exhibited at art venues in New York, San Francisco, New Jersey and Florida. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
